Change curve that shows the stages of grief related to how we handle change

Change Nugget: The Change Curve

This month we entered the Expression of Interest and Staffing part of the PEAK transition. Some of you have received notifications that you are eligible for the Expression of Interest process which would allow you the possibility to make a lateral move to the Human Resources or Finance Operations Center or the Talent Acquisition Center of Expertise. Some of you aren’t eligible for the Expression of Interest process, but if you apply by Friday, November 21 to one of the PEAK job openings you will receive preferred consideration. Both of these options can feel exciting, scary or daunting at first. One tool that can be really helpful is the change curve.

The change curve is a model that was originally based on the five stages of grief - denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance - originally described by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross in her 1969 book On Death and Dying. The model has been adapted over the years and is often used for individuals and organizations to help people understand their reactions to change.

It's normal to feel any of these feelings. It's also important to remember that colleagues and leaders may be in a different place than you. Don’t compare yourself to others. It's good to talk to your supervisor, unit transition team, HR representative or a PEAK team member if you have questions or need more information about career choices.

Also, we encourage you to explore your options. The Expression of Interest process and Staffing model is designed to give you the opportunity to explore all of your options, whether that is expressing interest, applying for a position, or staying in your unit if there is opportunity to do so.
